15-16/Mark 8:22-38
Tomorrow’s Reading:
Lev 17-18/Mark 9:1-29

Lev - some new details revealed to me in this reading, that I didn't get the first time we did a read-thru; scapegoat, all-day event, coal/incense, etc..

Mark - why did Jesus have to lay his hands on blind man twice to heal; what was the message there?

Lev
Continued discussion on ‘unclean’ and cleansing – some new observations for me; The ‘tent of meeting’ and ‘Holy place’ were the same place. As we’ve discussed, the ‘Most Holy place’ was the place the ark of covenant and God’s presence/glory were; God’s glory hovering in a cloud over ark. The Day of Atonement was an all-day event with multiple officering/presentations to in the Most Holy place. Priest was to remove clothing, wash, and put on special clothing for services. Never really understood the purpose of the incense, thinking this was an ‘aroma pleasing to God’, as we hear so much about. But, the purpose was to lay on coals from burnt offering (didn’t know why they brought in coals from outside burnt offering either, but now I do) then lay incense on those coals, causing smoke to fill room so as to not to see God’s glory. ‘Scapegoat’ – two goats chosen for sacrifice, one chosen to be sacrificed to the Lord and the other to ‘bear the sins’ of Israel and released into the desert.

Mark
God/Jesus’ powers are limitless – question from yesterday, why did Jesus ask ‘how many loaves of bread do you have’ (did it matter), and now, Jesus heals a blind man by placing spit in his eyes. He could see, but not clearly – Jesus placed hands on him again. Was this necessary to His powers (no) – so what was the point?

Jesus starts to reveal to disciples about his coming death and being rejected by elders, chief priest, and teachers. I think out of love and respect, Peter rebukes Jesus in his mind (Peter) no one could reject him (Jesus). ‘Get behind me Satan’ – Jesus rebukes Peter, basically say, you’re thinking w/an earthly mind. Jesus speaks to the crowd; “for whoever wants to save his life will lose it…”.

Shezam! C. - I just got something!! Remember back in Chapter 10 when Aaron's sons were put to death (v 2 "fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them")for using unauthorized fire in their censers? The fire they used did not come from the alter (which was to always be burning if I'm not mistaken) as instructed by God. I just now understood where the authorized fire was to come from. Thanks!!!
