Exodus 31-33/Mark 3:1-19
Tomorrow’s Reading: Exodus 34-35/Mark 3:20-35

Exodus
God speaking to Moses, finalized the commands/laws, Israelites make idols to other gods (golden calf made in image of Apis (Egyptian bull-god), see a real relationship/friendship between Moses and God. Some 'new light' for me in today's readings... good stuff.

Mark
Jesus continues to do miracles on Sabbath and Pharisees begin to plot His death.

Exodus
Setting: Moses still atop Mt Sinai getting instructions from God.

Bezalel (=in the shadow/protection of God) filled with Spirit of God and knowledge of all kinds of crafts - Oholiab to assist him. The final instruction was to observe the Sabbath, 6 days of work, 1 day of rest. Then God gave Moses ‘two tablets of testimony’.

Ch32:1 always has seemed odd to me – Israelites just crossed the Red sea then danced/sang songs about their trust/belief in God, then they say ‘come, make us gods who will go before us’ – a golden calf. I had forgotten that Aaron, Moses’ brother, was involved with the making of the calf. Notice in 32:7, 9 God no longer calling them ‘His people’, but calls them ‘your/these people’ – God disowns them for breaking covenant. 32:5, Aaron realizes things going bad and tries to do something to keep all from turning completely away. It would appear that Moses is a hot-head in v19, but the breaking of the tablets was a symbol of ‘breaking of the covenant’ with God. Trivia note: v15, tablets were written on both front and back.

Notice in v11-14 Moses pleas on behalf of Israel to God and in v32, ‘made his own death the condition for God’s destruction of the nation’. As a result, became the mediator – Jesus offered himself on the Cross for atonement for our sins. (I’ve never made this parallel). I get an image of Mr. Waternoose from Monsters.Inc when God says in 33:3, ‘go… and I might destroy you on the way’

Ch30:11 – I knew God and Abraham had a ‘friendship’, but never made that connection with Moses. Vv12-22 is just awesome – demonstrations the relationship and discussions between God and Moses, and His compassion to Moses.

Mark
Setting: still in Capernaum. Jesus just healed paralytic that was handed down thru the roof of a house and the calling of Matthew.

Jesus just collected grains from the field and healed a man w/a shriveled hand in the synagogue... on the Sabbath. Yep, you guessed it – Pharisees get a little ‘bent’. Notice the irony in v4; ‘which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill’. As Jesus was healing on the Sabbath, the Pharisees were starting to plot His death. Is ‘Herodians’ v6 funny to anybody but me? Jesus calls the twelve and designates them ‘apostles’.
