Exodus 1-3/Matt. 24:1-28
Tomorrows reading:
Exodus 4-6/Matt 24:29-51

Long post - Moses flees to Median, gets married, works for father-in-law and unknowingly being prepared for the Exodus, God's calling to remove Hebrews/Israelites (different name/same people) from Egypt.

Jesus talks about the end of times - worth more discussion than I've posted.

Exodus
Setting: Exodus means ‘exit’, leaving Egypt – timeframe was 1446 Moses wrote most of this book.

The Pharaoh that had placed Joseph in power for interpreting his dreams is now gone (died?). New sheriff in town – a little nervous that the Israelites are becoming so numerous. Verse 8 is key to understanding why the ‘need’ for the Exodus – they are now enslaved. Guessing they were just citizens before? Thoughts? He institutes a plan to kill all male children to stop the growth, but that plan failed.

Moses is born (both dad/mom were Levites) and fearing for his life for reasons mentioned above, mom puts him in a basket and floats him in the Nile. Pharoah’s daughter just happened to go down to wash and found the basket, eventually adopting. NOTE: wonder if mom thought her plan had failed and her baby (not yet named Moses) didn’t escape coming dome? See note from yesterday – Gen50:19-21.

Moses (now a murder) kills an Egyptian for beating a Hebrew, one of his own. He flees to Midan, which is way south from Salt Sea, bordering the Red sea – escaping death himself from Pharaoh a second time. He finds a wife there, Zipporah, at a well when watering the livestock (starting to think well’s were a great place to find wives!) – they have a son and name him Gershom – an alien in a foreign land (kind of his entire life story). Note: ch3:3, Jethro and Reuel are same man.

Nugget: connecting the dots – ‘all part of God’s plan’, highlight again: I found this from another resource, but well worth the read. I just now made this connection.

Reuel unknowingly (or possibly knowingly) played an important part in preparing Moses for his Exodus mission. Moses had been born and raised in Egypt. He had lived a relatively easy life - the hardships of living in the Sinai wilderness would have been unknown to him while growing up in the home of the Pharoah's daughter. (Exodus 2:10) During the long time that Moses lived and worked keeping Reuel's flocks, Reuel no doubt taught him all about desert life.

Many are surprised when they first read that Moses spent 40 years out in the desert wilderness before returning to Egypt for the Exodus. Certainly by then he would have become well familiar and accustomed to life in the Sinai, where he would later spend another 40 years leading the Israelites during their wilderness journey before their entry into the Promised Land. The long time spent out in the very same wilderness where the freed Israelites would be taken and held for 4 more decades was all part of God's education of Moses. And that training was accomplished through Reuel the Midianite.

All of vv14-22 will come to pass – exactly as God states (no real shocker here, I’m sure)

Matthew
Jesus speaks to the destruction of Jerusalem, how nation will rise against nations, famines, earthquakes, abomination that causes desolation (alter to pagan gods), anti-Christ deceiving event the ‘elect’, people scurrying all around – complete chaos.

Thoughts on Matthew’s reading?
