--------------------------------
Today's reading in Genesis is just huge in 'connecting the dots' with both old and new testaments. As Chris pointed out, this is were we learn about the naming of the nation Israel, and the significance of the name Israel.
And equally as exciting (yeah.. I'm still new), in Matthew - I finally got it about the parable of the land-owner: It's never too late to trust in Him!
Hope you have time to read comments..

Setting; last reading, Jacob had devised a plan to ‘take’ all of his father-in-law’s (Laban’s) livestock, and it worked. If only we had a veterinarian on our viewing/reading team to explain how the whole ‘branches in the troughs’ had anything to do with marking the herds. Guessing nothing, it was all God anyway (Gen31:9).
God instructs Jacob to leave Laban’s place in Paddan-Aram, Haran (see map) and return home (Bethel where he first started this journey and had dream/blessed rock/built alter). God said “I will be with you”. Wow! 32:1, Jacob sees angles of God, but nothing more is said,… assurance that God was with him. Jacob is a little nervous about meeting Esau (yeah… you think?) and wants to shower him with gifts to ‘buy’ his love from is brother (v20).
Chapter 32:22-32 is just huge in the understanding of Israel. As Chris pointed out in his last post, Jacob actually wrestles with ‘a man’ [God] – Israel means ‘struggles’. The ‘play’ is this, Israel (new Jacob) the nation will continually struggle with man (the old Jacob).
Matthew
Setting: still in Capernaum.. Jesus is still talking to his disciples, the 12. The land-owner pays each man the same for their work, a denarius (1 day’s wage)… regardless how long they had worked. Some argued that it wasn’t fair to pay a man 1 denarius for working all day (3rd hour is 9am.. 11th hour is 5pm) and another man the same for working only 1 hour. I’ve ‘sat’ on this parable for a long time and it’s meaning… but just now getting it: God extends His graciousness and generosity to the ‘late-comers’.
Life Lesson: it’s never to late to trust in Him!!

You're right. Breeding animals where they can see streaked branches has no influence on what color the offspring will be. It was God. Jacob was a pretty sharp herdsman by breeding only the strong animals and culling the weak ones.
