Exodus 12-13/Matt 26:1-35
Tomorrow’s Reading: Exodus 14-15/Matt 26:35-75

Exodus/Matthew

Here we go - jumping into the most referenced reading in entire bible with both books; Israelites set out on their long (40 years) journey and Jesus hosts 'the Last Supper', leading into his coming death.

Exodus
Setting: in Egypt after 9 of the 10 plagues

Preparing for the Passover, blood of unspotted goats/lambs on sides/tops of door (Note: they were to care for goats/lambs for four days, then slaughter - sure there’s some meaning there, but not sure this a.m.) – bitter herbs represent bitter years in Egypt, w/out yeast represents the haste in which Israelites left Egypt. The first born male child/animals will be struck down. Israelites were protected from all other plagues, not sure why they had to do blood on doors for this 10th and final plague. Hmmm.. could represent His atonement thru the blood sacrifice, dunno.

So, they dip’d a Hyssop branch in the trough of blood basin (Hyssop had a ‘hairy surface’ and was good for retaining liquids). Note that the destroyer mentioned in v23 is in fact an agent of God, not the devil. That same night, all died as mentioned. Pharaoh has had enough and tells Moses to get out – 600,000 men, besides woman/children. So, after about 430 years since Joseph first entered Egypt, they’re now leaving - what, 1.5-2million people heading to the desert with no food, water, or plans? Wow.

Headed for the land promised of milk and honey, they head into the Sinai desert – notice the ‘easy/direct’ route was straight East, by way of the Sea from #1 to #17 on the map. But the Philistine country was heavily guarded by the Egyptians by a ‘string of fortresses’. And as with Jacob, and Joseph were told, God was with them always – in a pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire at night.

Matthew
Setting: still on Mt of Olives with the 12, just spoke to the day of Judgment, then on to Bethany (Lazarus was raised for the dead, not to be confused where Jacob had his dreams in Bethel that we read about the day of Gen 33-35).

Passover is in two days – huge festival (hundreds of thousands, NIV notes); Jesus tells the 12 of his coming death (this is the 4th time he’s told them, I think). Jesus anointed in Bethany by ‘a woman’ – why this woman, what did she know about Jesus? This was Mary (John 12:1-8) – do you think she knew from the 12 about his coming death, and this was an act of love/devotion to someone she loved (deeply as a friend) and was about to loose?

Notice that Judas seeks out chief priest – in Matthew, impressions are all disciples were angry with the ‘waste’ of perfume/nard… but in John, it just mentions Judas. Judas is identified in John as a thief. And, when you put the two readings together, it seems Judas did seek out the priest as part of his anger to ‘sell off’ the where-about’s of Jesus for 30 silver coins (120 Denarii = 1 days work worth 1 Denarii).

Lords supper; Jesus identifies the one that will betray him – Judas. The dipping of the bread is customary, and suggest ‘trust’, alluding to all the more deceitful Judas was (insert ‘punk’ here). Peter is told he’ll deny Jesus.. not sure why he does, although ‘it was written’ in Zec 13:7
