Exodus 21-22/Matt 27:51-66
Tomorrow’s Reading: Exodus 23-24/Matt 28

Exodus
God giving instructions to Israelites at foot of Mt. Sinai - today's reading is one of those that take patience.

Matthew
Jesus dies on the cross and placed in the tomb - Pharisees once again are a little 'insecure', having tomb sealed and guards placed to prevent his body being taken, giving the appearance Jesus would arise on the third day.

Jesus shows us that he cant be kept in a box, there are no limits to his greatness. Do we try to place limits on Him in lack of trust, sometimes? Pray today... 'lay it down at the cross'; prayerfully give unresolved problems/troubles/pains/concerns/sorrow's, etc.. over to Him - and don't 'pick them back up'. He will give you peace.

Exodus
Setting: Still at the foot of Mt. Sinai – God’s glory has ascended upon the mountain – God is giving Moses instructions to the Israelites.

The instructions that God is giving to the Israelites seem obscure at first (v33 – man digs pit and ox falls in it…) but I’m sure have relevance. The ones that jump out at me are related to servants/slaves – NIV notes say no servant is to be bound to anyone’s perpetual slave, and rules related to being released. Also, the ‘eye for eye’ we always hear – Jesus ‘augments’ this rule in Matt 5:38 with ‘turn the other cheek’.

Matthew
Setting: Jesus was just taken to the cross and asked God why He has forsaken Him

Matthew 27:50, Jesus ‘gives up his life’ and the curtain to the most holy place in the temple was torn. Significance; we’ll see later in OT that no one had access to the ‘most holy’ place in temple other than Levi select priest. At Jesus’ death, curtain torn signifying we all have access to God. The earth shook, the dead arose from the ground and did some ‘window shopping’ in nearby town (insert Michael Jackson Thriller video here).

Centurion were Roman officers in charge of 100 men – you get the sense that Romans were a major influence to Jerusalem/land during this time, and set the rules/pace for this area. Knowing that, for a centurion to yell ‘Surely he was the Son of God’ is massive – death was the penalty for blaspheming the name of God, as said by the Sanhedrin during Jesus trial.

Jesus’ body was place in tomb of Joseph from Arimathea (20miles NW of Jerusalem) – they sealed the tomb and placed guards there because of Jesus promise of returning in 3-days. The Pharisees were afraid someone would steal Jesus’ body and claim he was raised from the dead.

Exodus 21:32 Dead slave worth 30 shekels. My study notes say 1 shekel worth the same as a "piece of silver" in Jesus' day. Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver....Hmmmm........
