Exodus
Setting; on the map, today’s reading starts out at #3, Pi Hahiroth, ends up crossing red sea there at #3 and we stop today at #5, Elim.

Moses and the 1.5/2million reach Red Sea (not Reed Sea, by the way) and God tells Israelites to turn back North, causing the appearance of confusion to Pharaoh. Pharaoh gets word that Moses and clan didn’t go just for a 3 day journey as they had said, but have fled.. so he [Pharaoh] pursues with an army.

In v10-12, as Pharaoh’s army approach, Israelites start lash out at Moses and say ‘we should have just stayed in Egypt’. Not real clear on v13-15; Moses assures Israelites that God will protect them ‘stand firm and you will be delivered’. In v15, God rebukes? Moses for crying out to him, just ‘move on’. God been telling Moses play-by-play up until now, was Moses suppose to have known what to do; is there a play on words with ‘stand firm/move on’? Dunno.

Moses stretches out his hand and the Red sea parts, Egyptian army was right on them so God caused confusion on Pharaoh’s army. ‘All that night’, East wind blew and separated sea, Israelites crossed over on dry land – Egyptians pursued, waters crash down on them by Moses’ command, all die… they dance/sing, good stuff in there; Lord is a warrier, unfailing love, etc.. Israelites are thirsty, Moses cries out to the Lord and He responds by showing him a piece of wood he throws into sea, and it becomes ‘sweet’ for drink (I didn’t remember this). Later, Israelites are thirsty, angers Moses and he’ll lose his life. They stop at Elim where there are 12 Springs and 70 palm trees – I get a vision of ‘rest’.

Matthew
Setting: Leaving Bethany and now at Gethsemane

Jesus leads 12 to garden of Gethsemane (name means Wine Press) and tells them to wait while he goes to pray. VERY IMPORTANT note from NIV: as Jesus falls to his knees in deep sorrow; Jesus was the ‘Lamb of God’ bearing the penalty of the sins for the entire human race. The wrath of God was truned loose on him. The cup in represents deep sorrow/suffering – here it refers to God turning His face on Jesus. Wow! When Jesus returns, assuming with Peter, James, John by his side, the 8 were asleep, this happens total of 3 times, where all were asleep every time he returned. Hmmm….a preacher may ask here, ‘are you sleeping in your relationship with Him’.

Judas comes with a crowd to betray Jesus – and Jesus refers to Judas as ‘friend’ in v50. Peter is messing up the plan of ‘scriptures be fulfilled’ by cutting off ear of soldier – Jesus simply states… ‘I got this, bro’. Jesus points out his peaceful nature, and this is all part of a higher plan. Then, all of the disciples ran away, in fear I guess, leaving Jesus in the hands of soldiers. Hmmm…a preacher may ask here, ‘are you standing firm or running away’.

Peter was lurking behind, following right to the courtyard of high-priest. Jesus is on trial now, being mocked, beaten, spit on… as Peter saw all of this, he was approached three times about his association/friendship with Jesus. Out of fear, he denied knowing Christ. Hmmm.. a preacher may ask here, ‘are you ashamed of your relationship with Christ’.
