Job 41-42/Matt 16

Tomorrow’s Reading: Gen 23-24/Matt 17

Wow.. very long post today; we're done with Job and in Matthew 16 is the starting point of the Jesus' death - he describes to his deciples in Caesarea Philippi that he must die then he would rise again.

Job
God continues to illustrate His power and show how small Job (we) really are – chapter 41 is nothing but a long, detailed discussion on the Leviathan. NIV notes mention ‘perhaps a crocodile’, but seems to be more – thoughts? Check out this ‘visual’ to get an idea of what God is describing.

I imagine Job with his head down, ‘caught’, possibly feeling shame, and just worn out. His response to God is ‘surely I spoke of thing I did not understand’ then repents. God doesn’t ‘blaze’ our three friends for their part in this story. Past notes say that Elihu (the young guy) isn’t mentioned in this final chapter in God rebuke because he was attacking/repeating only what Job had said about his ‘being innocent’, not like the others who misrepresented God's truths.

Interestingly so, NIV notes remind me of the Pharisees and Kevin’s comments on missing 12” from head to heart – I’m just going to quote notes here (ie, live it, don’t just speak it):

“The counselors, on the other hand, mouthed many correct and often beautiful creedal statements, but without living knowledge of the God they claimed to honor. Job spoke to God; they only spoke about God. Even worse, their spiritual arrogance caused them to claim knowledge they did not possess”

Matthew
From yesterday and my confusion of 4000/5000, when I read thoese events the first time… I thought them to be the same event in my brain and didn’t put thought to separate events, when actually they were. Hmm.. we don't reference the 1st event of 4000 much in church... not sure why.
Matthew is the only book of the Gospels that mentions the feeding of 4000. Ok.. I’m done with that topic. Ahah

Interestingly so, the Pharisees and Sadducees asked of Jesus for a ‘a sign from heaven’. Wow – didn’t we just talk about healing of possibly hundreds, feeding of over 10,000 from basically nothing? Jesus refused to provide ‘more compelling proof’ than His miracles.
Side note: ‘always heard if sky is red at dusk, tomorrow will be nice day’ Matt16:2 ref.

As mentioned in Matt 13:31-58’s reading (yeast was good there), yeast seemed to always be related to ‘bad’ – here, we see that.

Traveling north from the Sea of Galilee (where we've been haning out) about 30miles to Caesarea Philippi ('Self' named partly after son of Herod Philip) is were Peter starts to get it – and interestingly, v17 says… ‘.. for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my father in heaven’. Jesus had never told them who he was (I don't think) Peter has to be very proud of him-self at this point – then v23, rebuked. Thoughts?

And finally (sorry for long post this a.m.); what do you think 16: 27 means;… ‘he will reward each person according to what he has done’ - on earth, in heaven? I'm guessing this is where 'if I'm a good person/good deeds/works come from.

16:24-26 SMV (Scott’s Memory Verses I’ll post links to later) "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul”
