Double click map - will see Edom (named after Esau - meaning Red, I think), Judah one of Jacob's sons, land of Israel (Jacob), notice Penuel where Jacob wrestled with God!, Galilee where Jesus and the 12 were hanging out..

Setting: Jacob had devised ‘his plan’ on meeting Esau by sending gifts (livestock), Jacob wrestles with God (yeah, very cool) and finally realizes ‘the blessing must come from God’ (NIV Notes) by saying ‘.. unless you bless me’ in v29.
Jacob meets with Esau, and Esau greats him openly, and it was quite an emotional reunion (this is where Hallmark was founded) – Esau standing tall. They agree to meet in Seir (oddly so, Seir means rough or shaggy, as in a he-goat: Esau was hairy man) NOTE: also is known as Edom, region just South East of Dead (Salt) Sea where Esau eventually resides. Esau sets out for Seir and Jacob (that dawg), deceives Esau again, and heads to Succoth… which is in the opposite direction – North East of Dead Sea, about 100miles apart. Are you starting to get why I thought Esau got a raw deal. Ahah
Jacob’s daughter Dinah, by wife Leah, gets ‘defiled’ by Shechem, a Canaanite. Schechem wanted to marry Dinah; he had ‘the hots’ for her and, knew the benefits/blessings of the line of Jacob. I’m thinking this is where the term ‘goat boys’ originated when Jacobs sons rally to defend Dinah’s honor and kill/plunder the house of Shechem. God tells Jacob to head back to Bethel (where he first started, slept on a rock, dream, Angles up/down latter to heaven – sometimes referred to a Luz).
God names Jacob ‘Israel’ and gives same promise he did his dad Isaac, and grandfather Abraham – increase in numbers, etc.. Rachael dies during child birth to Benjamin (the ‘land of Benjamin’ comes later). Note the names of Jacob’s kids; they’re the names of regions we’ll be reading about later.
Matthew
Setting: Jesus was talking with the 12 and parables and headed south about 80+ miles south, ‘up to Jerusalem’ (Northern tip of Salt Sea). Remember, a few days back, we talk about Jesus talking to the 12 about his coming death.
Jesus talks of being betrayed, crucified, the raised to life again (think this is the third time He’s told them). Sounds like Jesus is getting ‘all bent’ on mother of James/John, but ‘can you drink the cup I’m going to drink’ speaks of his suffering to come. Why did Jesus come; v28.. give his life for man (SMV).
