Exodus 23-24/Matt 28
Tomorrow’s Reading: Exodus 25-26/Mark 1:1-22
Exodus - Moses and others ascend to the mountain to talk w/God to celebrate this new OT covenant. When reading this for the first time, the fact that Moses was standing "face to face" to God's glory on a slab of sapphire, was just awesome.
Matthew - finished Matthew today. Jesus dies on cross and is risen on 3rd day - Pharisees devise a plan to tell all His body was stolen and was not raised. Jesus is raised and is alive today - Jesus gives us the Great Commission, go out to the nations and be a witness.
What an awesome God we have! As a new learner myself, this has yet to be boring - I get excited every time I read thru this.

Exodus
Setting: Moses is telling the Israelites God laws
After completing the laws, Moses, his brother Aaron, Aaron’s two sons, and 70 elders are to ‘go up’ and worship at a distance. (70 elders could represent Jacob’s 70 decedents that traveled to Egypt per Joseph’s request; Gen 46:27). Moses alone was to approach God – representative of a ‘mediator’ between the Israelites and God during this OT covenant, where Jesus is the ‘NT mediator’
The 74 went up the mountain, I’m thinking partially, and saw ‘the God of Israel’ – only ‘his glory’ (Glory; often a cloud, fire, etc.. ), as no one has seen God’s face. Verse 11, ‘they saw God, and they ate and drank’ – a ‘covenant meal’ celebrating the sealing of laws just handed down. NIV Notes; ‘… it foreshadows the Lord’s Supper, which celebrates the new covenant sealed with Christ’s death.
Matthew
Setting: Jesus died on the cross and placed in tomb, guarded by Roman soldiers (only mentioned in Matthew)
An angel of the Lord comes down and rolled the stone aside, the earth shook with a violent earthquake (only mentioned by Matthew). Angel speaks to Mary Magdalene and says ‘I know what you came to see, but He is not here – He has risen’. We sing a song about this: He is risen, he is risen, and He lives…. Forever more – come and celebrate the resurrection of the Lord.
Angel tells Mary He has risen and is headed to Galilee – the disciples were to meet him there. Pharisees devise a plan to tell everyone his body was stolen, not risen. Hmm… was partially effective – I’ve heard this more than once 2000 years later.
Jesus gives us the great commission in 28:19; go make disciples of all nations. Be a witness.
