New Learners: I recommend purchasing a copy of 'The Message' for a much easier read - I prefer the NIV Study, but that's just what I use. Unless you have the patience of Job (will be reading about this cat soon), ... I would NOT start with King James.
Action Requested: we have over 20-30 that have committed to read with us - wow, good job (not Job) to all for passing word around. Observations from today's reading: Adam and Eve were given plants/fruits to eat - no mention of animals (vegetarians at this point). (1) God had to make clothing for them because they weren't hunters, etc.. (2) what's going on with Gen1:18-20.. "No suitable helper was found"?

Good deal Chris.. thanks for the post. I've dropped a few notes on some of the other folks I know is reading with us to see if everybody 'crossed the starting line', and seeing about 50/50.
Anybody else notice the word "created" was used only in verse 1 and on day 5 and 6 of the creation story(NIV). My study notes suggest days 1 through 4 were a reorganization of the heavens and earth created in verse 1. I've heard a little about the "Gap Theory" or the "Divine Judgement Theory" where in verse two the word "Now" indicates a significant time lapse between verse 1 and 2 and the earth as described in verse two was not in the same form as it was created in verse 1. The word "was" can also be translated "became"(v 2). My study notes indicate this could have had something to do with the rebellion of Satan. Anyone else heard/seen anything like that?

I was reading along when I came to 5:21-24 about Enoch. I was interested in finding out more about his "short" lifespan. I am reading NASB, so I got out one of my commentaries and it goes into more depth about Enoch. Only two people are said to have "walked with God." Noah and Enoch. The Bible only records two people who did not die, Elijah and Enoch. When I first read it, I think I read "and Enoch died," but the text says "Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him." Pretty interesting.
Hello fellow readers. I have two quick takes on day one read. Out of NIV, Matt1:3, Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah. Why no mention of the lineage below Zerah if you are going to mention his name? Take 2, Matt1:20 The angel of the Lord appeared and said "Joseph, son of David..." Why not son of Abraham? Someone set me straight...

The birth of Perez and Zerah (they were twins) is in Gen 38:27-30. I'm no expert but here's my take. Matthew was trying to prove Christ's lineage to Abraham. Since that line came through Perez and not Zerah he chose not to list the offspring of Zerah. Why Zerah was mentioned at all...I'm not sure.
Son of David? It was common knowledge to Jews in Joseph's day that David's ancestry could be traced back to Abraham. The angel could have said "Son of Abraham" and the meaning would have been the same. Isn't it cool (and I think no accident) the angel chose to use the name of Israel's greatest King, a King known to be close to God, to describe the earthly father of our Heavenly King?

I often get tangled up on the Son of David, and why that was used. Just to add to Kevin’s post, note Luke 3:23 and his approach to documenting Linage.
Side note: think Abraham was just the coolest cat ever. My first hero when I started my reading/walk (6) years ago.
Jeff and Abbey; we just studied about Enoch. When I think of Enoch, I often think of Jabez - short mentions but big impact.
I thought Abraham 'walked with God' too? He was a stud (can we say that on this blog - snicker) and had a great relationship with God.
Also, I wondered from day 1 about Adam/Eve could 'hear God walking', so they hid. Just wonder what that was like?
