Job 28-29/Matt 13:1-30

Job’s character gets outlined - Job was quite the man in his community, well respected for his knowledge, wisdom, seems to have been a true gentleman, and 'a ladies man' (ok.. had to throw in a joke about v13 and making a "widows heart sing").

Take a 'new' look at Matthew and 'sewing of the seed' – there are some fresh insights that are sticking in my brain about when is it [sharing the gospel/witnessing] ‘good enough’; I’m struggling with/thinking of Paul and his ‘shaking the dust off his boots’ (forget where that is - God tells Paul to just move on, you've said your peace) and this verse... the ‘path’ example. Thoughts if you got time… just 'throwing the seed', is that good enough?

Job 28 seems to outline mans dispirit attempt to find precious metals/jewels for personal wealth/gain… what an exhaustive effort. We as believers will find ‘wisdom’ (wisdom has always been referred to as ‘she’ in the bible as I can recall, but not here – is identified with ‘it’. Have no idea of that relevance, but just an observation I made). Then ch28 summes it up with a SMV Job 28:28; ‘And he said to man, The fear of the Lord – that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding’. Nice! NOTE: this almost appears to be a different writer of this book than we’ve seen over the past chapters.

Job 29 gives us a clear picture of Job’s character and reputation among his community. If you’ve ever seen Ground Hog day, he was the ‘end of the movie’ Phil Connors (Bill Murray) of his day.

Matt

We here this a lot, ‘well, at least you threw the seed out there’. I've never been happy with that, for some reason. Matt 13 compares seed to the gospel, the good news, the Word – ‘spreading of the Word’ to those around the world. The outcome/success/results of that seeding, depend on the 'condition of ground’ – the path, the rocky ground, the thorns, good soil (or is it soul.. heeh). In v11, the knowledge of the secretes of heaven is given to us all, but it’s up to us on how we respond (hear/receive) in order to produce, right.

Not to get up in the pulpit on everyone, but I’ve always taken this message in a ‘churchy kinda way’, but just didn't 'set well' with me. Reading closely in v19… compares the path to the one that does not understand the message/Gods Word, or our witnessing,… and it (message/witness) is ‘snatched away by the evil one’. So, just saying ‘well, you sewed the seed’ – is that good enough; should the intent be to try again, etc... And in v22 - this is all of us right, seeds falling in thorns that get choked out by life. So, if you’ve receive a few calls from folks on this team (ie,… everybody) to encourage you to read and ‘get into the Word’, this is a great verse that justifies ‘the hounding’ – teaming so we all get thru the bible AND understand as much of the meanings as possible… most importantly, to grow.
