Tomorrow's reading: Job3-4, Matt 8:1-17
Long post for today's reading.. will add as a comment to this original post. In short, Job has a great life, God recognizes that. Job's life turned upside down to see where his heart is. Matthew's reading also about 'where your heart is'.. good read.

Job 1 Where in the Sam Hill is the Land of Uz
The land may have originally been named after Uz, who was the son of Aram, and grandson of Shem (Genesis 10:23, 1 Chronicles 1:17) The two most likely locations for the land of Uz is in Arabia, east of Petra (today, northwestern Saudi Arabia), or more likely, in Bashan, east of The Sea Of Galilee and south of Damascus (today, western Jordan or southern Syria)..
Job1:1-5 Paints a ‘Ward Cleaver’ kind of life – blissful family gathering regularly for feasts that would sometimes last as long as a week. V6-8, what’s that about; Satan says just roaming the earth and God said ‘have you considered my servant Job’? v9-11 is almost as if this is Satan’s response to God’s lead? Thoughts?
V15-22; wow, need help here; Sabeans (cats from south Arabia) killed ox, donkeys, servants, v16 fire of God fell from sky, v17 Caldeans killed camels (cats from Mesopotamia… ie, Babylonia.. when I figure how to post maps, I’ll share), then in v19 a mighty wind. Who was controlling fire/wind.. did Satan posses this power or was God assisting to prove his point? Even after this great lose, Job praise God’s name
Job 2
V10 even thought Job’s wife is telling Job to curse God for all that is happening to him all of a sudden; Job remains ‘solid’ and says ‘shall we accept good from God and not the trouble’. My take here: God is an awesome God… we are blessed beyond our imagination. Even in rough times, these too are blessings – what’s up with that? Again to me, this is a time for God’s calling on us… divine intervention we here so much about. Commune with him always, commune with him deeply in times of trouble/sorrow. V11-13, at this point, things seem good with Job’s friends – they are there to comfort/sympathize with him. Let’s see how that plays out.. heheh
Matt 7
V7-8 another SMV (Scott’s memory verse – again, more on this later) to assist in our confidence/ability to witness to others. V9-12, Jesus making a clear point/parallel to our relationship with our own kids. Sometimes we have to ‘keep it real’ to get the point. V13-14 broad/narrow gate – gotta seek/scrap it out, get into God’s word. What we’re doing here with this blog and brotherly/sisterly (is that a word) accountability.v21-23 ‘heavy’ stuff – thoughts? Follow up with next verse, v24.. ‘..hears my words and puts them into practice’.
The land of Uz. Hmmm ... I think that's where Dorothy met the wizard and sang "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."
Job 1:12 God removes his hedge of protection from everything but Job's health.
Job 1:16 A messenger reports that the fire of God fell from the sky ..."
One serious topic of discussion is DOES GOD INFLICT HARDSHIPS AND TRIALS ON HIS CHILDREN?
I believe that v.16 is the first of many times throughout this book that friends (messengers), believers, non-believers try to attribute every unexplainable action to God. Sometimes God IS the author of things that we don't understand. However, many times bad occurences that we can't understand the results of
1. Lucifer and Other Fallen angels creating havoc in our world.
2. The actions of evil men
3. The actions of good men who stray off target and are not following what they know to be God's TRUE plan.
4. Other reasons that I'm not smart enough to think of on the spur of the moment.
My point is this - THROUGHOUT THE BOOK OF JOB FRIENDS WILL WRONGLY INTERPRET EVENTS. Note that they have the best of intentions and are doing what they believe to be right. And, they really are friends of Job. The messenger in v.16 is reporting whole-heartedly what he believes to be true. His perception is that God sent the fire. It could be that Satan was the author of this unexplainable catastrophe.
Since worship leadership is my primary vocation, I will call attention to the fact that Job's response to tragedy was PRAISE. Wow! God help me to have that kind of relationship with you. Uh! ... Can we have that kind of relationship without the tragedy?
Note: the friends start out very wisely. Sitting without talking for 7 days and 7 nights.
Matt 7
Interesting that chapter 7 contains both v.1-5 about judging and v.15-23 about identifying a tree by its fruit. Are these contrasting ideas. When you identify, don't you judge?
My take is that v.1-5 are often over-exaggerated to say we're not to judge at all. Actually, we are to judge ourselves first and most harshly. When we judge others we should be full of GRACE and COMPASSION. v.2 "For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." This does not preclude or eliminate all judging. It does also reflect v.12 - in everything do to others as you would have them do to you."
Final thought on Matt 7. In order to build on the Rock foundation of Christ we must judge/identify rock from sand.
Welcome Matt – and great responses/insight!! - I too picked-up on Job's praise even after the worst tragedy – if that loss happened in today’s times, it would be in the papers/news for a long time. Even in suffering, in all things give praise, right?
I often wondered about his friends – they do get a bad-rap and I’ve struggled with if it was deserved or not. In other words, were they just preaching their heart to a good friend, even though missing the mark? It seemed sincere from today’s reading.
Your comments on fruits/judging: very interesting views – cool. John 10 speaks to false-profits, etc. and the ‘…sheep follow him (shepherd..) because they know his voice’. Now, in that analogy – I know sheep aren’t smart enough to judge, but they just respond. Do you think its possible for us as believers to ‘just respond’ and not judge... therefore, not necessarily contrasting thoughts? (just trying to stir conversation here). From John 10/Ezekiel 13, if we are able to recognize ‘false shepherds’.. then we’re able to just ‘stay away’ and simply ignore.
One thing my bible mentioned was that Job's wife wasn't taken from him - perhaps he was more plagued by her presence than her absence! One thing I didn't remember was Job offering sacrifes for his children after they had parties - what a great model of fatherhood!
Welcome Sara Beth to 'post-land' (if i haven't already welcomed you). So are you saying Job’s wife was just a pain? eheheh
Before 'ceremonial laws' of Moses, the tablets (you know.. the Mel Brooks movie), the father of the family would act as Priest. I have an idea what 'act as priest' kinda/sorta means and it's relevance, but not exactly sure.
Possibly specific to the divisions of the land/responsibilities (Levites) – perhaps specific to the detail of offerings that gets outlined later.
Side note: since this is a chronological read, you can see why we jumped to Job.. the whole 'Moses thing' hasn't happened yet.
